Filipino Pop Music

Posted by jojo8 on May 25, 2008

I’ve been wondering why Filipino pop music hasn’t taken off. In fact, bands, especially rock bands are the more popular these days. I know more bands than pop singers in the biz. What’s up with that? I’m checking out music scenes in Asia and so far the Philippines is the only country where Kpop and Jpop is not well known. Maybe I’m exaggerating, so it’s probably at least in Southeast Asia. Frankly speaking, Filipinos are, if not the best, at par with other Asian countries when it comes to singing. Must be culture…

I noticed anything Filipino when it comes to music, people tend to think of it as Jologs or corny. Some just think Filipino/Philippine pop is corny while they worship the rock bands. I think I get it.. They think it is uncool to appreciate pop because it will diminish their manliness.. bleh!… even worse if it’s Filipino pop. For the girls who love rock band and disses Filipino pop, they think it’s corny and uncool, plain and simple. Haiiizz… That’s sad.

For me, I like rock very much. But… I also like pop/r&b, classical (the more popular ones), etc. I think nowadays good music depends on who hears it. Would it be too much to ask for a little respect to other’s choice of genre of music? Of course not… You just shut up and mind your own business!

Anyway, back to topic. I am more inclined for Filipino singers to sing pop/r&b. They can be pretty d@#n good if they try. The problem is not a lot of composers for this type of music. Me thinks, they need to import composers (of music) from other countries. The lyrics are fine but the music needs to be upgraded. If JayR could just compose music full time, that would be swell.

JayR- Ngayo’y Naririto

He’s really good. In my opinion, he needs more promotion. So sad he is not that well known.  Getting stuck in SOP!Rules is not doing him any good… Well that was harsh, I admit. …What I mean is he needs to promote his music not just in one TV channel. The thing in music biz is, you need to promote and promote until you can get your music to all, not just the sosyals (bleh!), conyos (again, bleh!), to all classes A, B, C, D.

Talking about pop, it’s a blasphemy to not mention the Pop Princess of the Philippines (I don’t know who coined that title), Sarah Geronimo. There are really good singers in the Philippines. I like a lot of them. I should mention Nina, Kyla, and Rachell Ann Go. Still, many would agree Sarah is still the most popular and most admired personality by young ones and old alike. I just wish Sarah would be given materials that are more into pop/R&B than just the birit songs. In fairness to her, she’s really good in any type of songs she sings. It’s funny that in youtube people say she’s good but needs originality since she is always singing other people’s songs. Duhhhh… The videos they just watched are the ones taken in a variety show, ASAP ‘08. It is shown every week and they can’t just sing their own songs every freakin’ week and the fact that they perform (dance and sing with hosting on the side) twice or thrice would make it very redundant, wouldn’t it? FYI, Sarah’s Taking Flight album is good, few birit songs, a little r&b and some pop.

Anywho… I found this video and take note, this is not hers. This is originally sang by Fergie for the soundtrack of Sex and the City.

Labels or Love, popularized by Fergie. Version of Sarah Geronimo.

Now if the record labels would give materials like that to Sarah and others, Filipino pop would surely make progress. Yeah, I know it’s very pop, very catchy. I just want to see them add flavor to Fpop. The ballad songs are very good but we need catchy tunes and danceable music for others to appreciate it.

This is a nice one but I need more….

My Take on the New Single of Wonder Girls – “So Hot”

Posted by jojo8 on May 23, 2008

First of all I’m not a fan. There… that’s out. So here we go..

The first song I heard from them is the ever popular (until now) “Tell Me” song. Admittedly, that’s the only song other than So Hot I have heard from them. Tell Me, apparently, is very popular in Korea so much so that it’s called the Tell Me syndrome.

Very catchy…

and then here’s So Hot

again very catchy… But… not my cup of tea. I don’t doubt I’ll get an LSS if I listen to this several times over. Nevertheless, I won’t buy an album because of this song. Maybe iTunes, and that is if I remember it and convinced myself enough to pay for it.

Overall, based on these TWO songs, their music is very catchy, good for recall, easier marketing. Kudos to JYP entertainment for this.

On a side note, Sohee looks very cute. Her face is cute like on a child “cute.” The sexy image their peddling is kinda disturbing. Cute and sexy doesn’t go together in my opinion. Pretty and sexy– maybe..
