REWIND: Sarah Geronimo and Arnel Pineda’s “When Love and Hate Collide”

Last October 10, 2010, Sarah G. and Arnel P. performed Deff Leppard’s “When Love and Hate Collide.” The song was again popular after Deff Leppard sang it with the current princess of the music scene, Taylor Swift. Sarah and Arnel gave an amazing performance that some fans actually liked it more than Taylor-Deff Leppard’s . As was customary in the segments of the show, ASAP XV, the song was cut short to make way for the other artists to do their part.

Last Sunday, 10/31/2010, Sarah Geronimo performed “Love the Way You Lie,” originally sung by Rihanna and Eminem, for her regular segment in ASAP XV-Sarah On Stage.

This should shut up the Sarah haters who delusionally think Sarah always lip synch. Apparently, this is a dare, but Sarah delivered!! If you think for one second that she did the Rihanna part, well you are wrong!

Pop Girls!

I just heard some of the Pop Girls’ songs. They are quite catchy. They clearly are teens! hahaha! Appropriate for their age, I guess. Age bracket is 13-16.

The music video sucks! Needs improvement on the dancing. The choreographer (actor) and the choreography are annoying. Don’t like the clothes. Good voice, though.

Whew!

It’s been months since I last blogged about something. I hope to do this regularly now.

There’s a change in my music playlist though. I had quit listening to other Asian artists but I’m still loyal to DBSK. The first KPOP group I liked!! So sad about the news that the three members (mickey, jaejoong, junsu) are having an “issue” with SM Ent. I hope it will turn out well.

DBSK

I’m mostly listening to Filipino bands and solo artists and Western Music right now and kind of in debate with myself whether I should continue blogging about Asian music (KPOP, JPOP) since a lot of blogs are dedicated to these two. What I would like to do is to feature Filipino bands since there are few sites for them. I’m not a hardcore fan of bands. I just like to listen to them. I mean I’m not the authority about Filipino bands. Hmmmmmmm… will not give up in Filipino solo artists though!!!

VIVA Entertainment just launched their new singing group. It’s the……..POP GIRLS!….. what????? Hahaha. That was so unimaginative! They’re kinda good vocally but hellooo? KPOP anyone?! I hate to be negative but I think it will not work because Filipinos don’t like POPish groups. They think it’s baduy or jologs (basically cornball/uncool). There is actually a double standard. If it’s KPOP or JPOP, people might accept them or at least tolerate them because they are not Filipinos. You know, different tastes and all. Filipinos generally are very harsh to local artists when it comes to review of performance, clothes, and overall image.

Pop Girls

Haiizzz… sadly POP is still frowned upon in the Philippines. These Pop Girls can be a hit but they need to revise their image. People see them as KPOP group wannabees. They can just focus on their vocals and dancing. Do better MVs. Tone down the colors. I doubt if they will change the group name. It sucks!

Filipino Pop Music Part 3

Bands in the Philippines are big. Filipino Pop music, on the other hand, is a joke. No such thing as Filipino Pop anymore. Singers continually recycle old songs with the exception of some artists. When I say BIG (in reference to bands), bands are more popular. There are more popular bands than individual (pop) artists and there are no pop group artists. Bands are the front liners of Philippine music.

East Asian pop artists are also know as “idols” and like what I’ve wrote in my other blogs, most of them cannot sing. But I am entertained (when I am able to tolerate their singing). That’s what I like–to be entertained. Besides, I don’t think artists here in the Philippines would just be plain “idols.” They can actually sing. I think RnB is more suited for Filipinos than Pop and might actually have a following. Bubblegum pop is not taken seriously by Filipinos. The other pop (the one which is not bubblegum LOL! what do you call it anyway?..) might be tolerable. I know grown-up people hate Bubblegum pop but let’s not forget there are also teenagers living in this country who likes it. Personally, I don’t like it. I dig Pop/RnB, though.

While Filipino bands are getting more popular, Filipino pop is dying. All I can hear is sappy love songs that are a throwback in the 80s and the punchline is–80s love songs are still better sounding. Must be why they keep remaking those songs. One obvious observation is that most Filipino pop songs are ballads. Ballads are fine but it gets monotonous when that is all you can hear (pun intended!). It’s boring! This is one of my pet peeves regarding Filipino music. Hello!!!! Why can’t anyone produce a single RnB song?… Alright, I take that back. Some artists actually did but they weren’t popular. Someone should knock some sense on the marketing people of these record companies. Their marketing is weak. A lot of artists can pull this (genre) off so there’s no lack of talent. So.. what gives?

Filipino Pop Music Part 2

I blogged about this topic before. My fingers were just itching to type these words because yesterday I came across some vids of Rivermaya, a Filipino alternative rock band, performing in South Korea for the Asia Song Festival 2008. They were sticking like a sore thumb there. You know why? They were the only rock band who performed. The rest were all Pop groups and artists.

Don’t get me wrong. I like Rivermaya, bought their albums, got LSS (Last Song Syndome, LOL!) from some of their songs. I just wish that Filipino Pop Artists were the ones who performed there. For the last two years (excluding this year), alternative rock artists represented the Philippines–Kitchie Nadal in 2006 and Barbie Almalbis in 2007. I hope next year it will be one of the Pop Artists even if they just sing pop ballad songs.

I think the most likely candidate, if we are talking about singing and dancing, would be Sarah Geronimo. She can sing diva songs (the one where you belt out lyrics) and pop songs, rap, and dance. I searched for her older MVs and what do you know? I found Sa Iyo, a pop song. She looked so young. The song is very pop and so teenage-ish. She was 14 years old here. She is 20 now. The choreography is so easy. LOL! That’s given since dancing in Music Videos is not really popular in the Philippines. Not unless you are Gary Valenciano!

This is Everybody Get Down MV from Interactive album by Gary Valenciano. He is really good and he still dances like a 20-year-old even though he is over 40 years old now. This song was released in 1998.

Sarah Geronimo has a new album. The album is Just Me with carrier single of I’ll Be There, a duet with Howie D. of Backstreet Boys. I did not like it at first but it grew on me. Note: (1) The MV was edited by the uploader. (2) The pink background was not in the original MV. (3) The MV was shot in one day.

Here is another song in the album, also entitled Just Me.

Just listening to this, I feel there is hope for Filipino Pop.

But ..

I would really like Sarah to have R&B songs. LOL!

DBSK Mirotic MV

So I just posted the new video of DBSK. It’s their first single, Mirotic. Yay—finally they’re back. I like the song. Played it repeatedly for the last week. One thing that bothers me is the hair. What’s up with the hair??!! Is it supposed to be fashion? Me-no-likey absolutely! Yunho and Changmin’s hair are okay, but the other three? Uh.. they should get another haircut.

I read somewhere that they’re album is a success. Good for them!
